The Sobieskis and Stuarts. Portrait of Clementina Sobieska, Lodovico Stern, 1740
after Martin van Meytens (1725)
oil on canvas, 1740
Royal Castle in Warsaw – Museum
This depiction of the wife of the claimant to the thrones of England, Scotland, and Ireland appears on her monumental tomb of 1742, designed by Filippo Barigioni, in Saint Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican in Rome, the most important of all Catholic churches. The portrait on the tomb, held by a sculpted personification of Faith and a winged putto, was made as a mosaic by the Roman master Pietro Paolo Cristofari. The artist based the mosaic on the likeness of King Jan III’s granddaughter in this portrait by Lodovico Stern (1709–1777), a painter of Austrian origin, who moved to Rome around 1724.
